The Trades Are Dying, And It’s Our Fault.
🚨 The Skilled Trades Are in Crisis 🚨
Everywhere you look, companies are desperate for skilled workers. Job sites are understaffed, deadlines are getting missed, and the cost of labor is skyrocketing. Yet, fewer young people are entering the trades than ever before.
📉 Here’s the brutal truth: The skilled trades are dying—and we’re to blame.
The Real Reasons No One Wants to Work in the Trades
It’s easy to say, “Kids these days don’t want to work.” But is that really the problem? Or is it something we created?
⚠️ Toxic Work Environments – Too many young workers enter the trades only to be met with verbal abuse, lack of mentorship, and ‘toughen up’ attitudes. If you’re hazing the next generation instead of training them, you’re part of the problem.
⚠️ No Clear Career Path – Many apprentices grind for years, hoping for a shot at leadership—only to hit a dead end. Without a clear path to advancement, they move on to something else.
⚠️ Ignoring Work-Life Balance – The top performers get buried in overtime because “we can’t find good people.” Burnout is real, and overworking the best workers is a great way to lose them.
⚠️ Failing to Market the Trades – Schools push college because we haven’t done enough to show the trades as a legitimate path to success. If parents and teachers still think the trades are for “kids who aren’t smart enough for college,” that’s on us.
The Hard Truth: If We Don’t Fix This, the Trades Will Collapse
Think about it. If we don’t attract, train, and retain young workers, what happens?
🔴 Infrastructure will break down – Roads, power grids, and HVAC systems won’t fix themselves.
🔴 Project costs will skyrocket – With fewer workers, companies will pay insane wages just to get jobs done.
🔴 Customers will suffer – Long wait times, unqualified workers, and lower-quality work will become the norm.
This isn’t some far-off problem. It’s happening NOW.
What We MUST Do to Save the Trades
💡 Train, Don’t Haze – Stop treating apprentices like they have to “earn their suffering.” Build them up, mentor them, and give them the skills to succeed.
💡 Create Growth Opportunities – If a talented worker doesn’t see a future, they’ll leave. Offer clear paths to leadership, ownership, or specialization.
💡 Respect Work-Life Balance – Stop running your best workers into the ground. Give them a reason to stay.
💡 Change the Narrative – Get into schools. Show young people real earning potential, real success stories, and real opportunities in the trades.
Are You Part of the Problem or the Solution?
The skilled trades aren’t dying because young people don’t want to work. They’re dying because we aren’t adapting.
So, what are YOU doing to fix it?
